Our return to Georgia started out uneventfully, with a wonderful visit to Columbus, the third-largest city in the state and located near the west-central border of the state — along the Chattahoochee River (a tributary of the Apalachicola River) — about 100 miles southwest of Atlanta. We officially kicked off the start of the second leg of our trip, arriving in Deming, New Mexico, on January 1, in the midst of a cold front that brought snow and frosty conditions — as well as a federal government shutdown that is challenging our plans for the trip.
